Over the summer, I saw a wonderful, wonderful show at White Cube gallery (which is still on for another week I believe). It was called Dreamers Awake and explored the works of female surrealists (http://whitecube.com/exhibitions/dreamers_awake_bermondsey_2017/).
This lead to two things:
- further explorations in collage and photography
- going to the UAL library to find further works on these and other female surrealists and stumbling upon this book in the animation section
This book I found to be extremely well written and a good survey of lesser known animations, specifically Estonian Animation. I found these wonderful animations that the book talked about and loved how they mixed realism and surrealism, letting us go back and forth between worlds that abide by the rules we know and worlds that don’t. For my final film, I hope to bounce between these two worlds in a similar way..!
